Treatment of Insects with Essential Oils

Insect Repellent: 

Mosquitoes, gnats, chiggers. and other bugs sometimes carry diseases, and their bites painful and itchy. These natural insect repellents are excellent alternatives to chemical-laden sprays and creams sold commercially.

Citronella Spray: 

MAKES 24 TREATMENTS

Most insects are repelled by citronella; it is such an effective insect repellent that it is used in a number of commercially available products.

Ingredients: 

  • 4 ounces water
  • 24 drops citronella essential oil

Directions: 

  1. In a dark-colored glass bottle fitted with a spray top, add the water and citronella essential oil, and shake to combine.
  2. Spray exposed skin and clothing before going outside.
  3. Repeat this treatment as needed, avoiding the eye area. Shake the bottle before each use. 

Geranium-Patchouli Spritz: 

MAKES 24 TREATMENTS

Geranium essential oil contains geraniol, which many manufacturers use in the production of natural insect repellents. Patchouli essential oil has a time-honored history as an effective insect repellent, and it lends a lovely fragrance to this delightful insect repellent.

Ingredients: 

  • 4 ounces water
  • 24 drops geranium essential oil
  • 24 drops patchouli essential oil

Directions: 

  1. In a dark-colored glass bottle fitted with a spray top, add the water along with the geranium and patchouli essential oils, and shake well to blend.
  2. Spray exposed skin and clothing before going outside.
  3. Repeat this treatment as needed, avoiding the eye area. Shake the bottle before each use.
