A lice infestation can quickly spread. Symptoms include itching and tiny red bites; nits, or louse eggs, can be seen clinging to the hair. Adult lice and nymphs maybe difficult to spot. If one of your family members has head lice, treat everyone. Seek medical intervention if essential oils do not make a difference.
Add geranium or rose geranium essential oil to natural shampoo to effectively kill adult and nymph lice; you will need to remove nits separately to keep them from hatching. In a glass bottle or a small glass bowl, combine 4 ounces of natural shampoo with 40 drops of geranium or rose geranium essential oil, and shake or stir to combine. Apply the shampoo to the entire head, scrubbing vigorously. Leave the shampoo in place for 10 minutes, taking care not to get suds in the eyes. Rinse and follow up with a conditioner. Remove the nits with a fine-tooth comb.
Neat Tea Tree Treatment:
Tea tree essential oil kills adult lice and nymphs. Be sure to check for nits separately and remove them with a fine-toothed comb. Apply as much tea tree essential oil as needed to the scalp and leave it in place for 40 minutes, then shampoo and condition the hair. Check for lice every few days, and repeat this treatment until they have been eradicated.
