Scabies is caused by tiny mites that burrow into the skin, causing extreme itchiness. left untreated, open sores and infection can develop. Because scabies is extremely contagious, all members of the family should be treated as soon as an infestation is discovered. The itching typically continues for two to four weeks after treatment has concluded. If symptoms recur or worsen, contact your doctor, as you may need a stronger treatment to eradicate the mites.
